Equalizer

An equalizer is a circuit or component used to adjust the amplitude of audio signals at specific frequencies. An equalizer essentially serves as a volume knob for a frequency or range of frequencies. A parametric equalizer takes a more effective approach by controlling three aspects of the band: the center/primary frequency, gain levels (boost or cut to decibels), and bandwidth/range (or Q, for Quotient of change). Parametric EQ adjustments are important for correcting room anomalies such as peaks (boomy spots) and nulls (low frequency dead zones)—to achieve a flat in-room frequency response and to even out the bass response throughout a room.
